The saying is not quite true...
"You get what you pay for..."
Some companies will let you use a cut down version of their software for free.
Cut down software will have the basic functions activated. If you like the product enough, or you want more bells and whistles, then you will hopefully pay for the full version.
A good free firewall is Zonealarm . It is pretty basic but does the job.
A good free example of antivirus software is Grisoft AntiVirusGuard.
Version 7.1 AVG free edition expires on 15 January 2007.
Remember, if you are NOT using AVG for personal use, you are required to buy a licensed copy. However it is reasonably priced and the strength of the pound against the dollar makes it cheaper for UK residents.
Spy ware Blockers:
Spybot is a basic, fast program that searches out spy ware on your PC and zaps it.
The program is free to use, however, the author would greatly appreciate any donations you care to make.
Remember, someone has had work on this software, update it, test it. All that costs money.

Open Source:
There are many software solutions that you can download and use without paying large fees.
Linux is probably the most well known,
Open Office is another. Open Office is free to download and use. It can open and save Most Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. However it is capable of doing much more.

Be aware that although the software is free to download, there can be a fairly steep learning curve and it is still not 100% compatible with all Microsoft office files.
